As I've been working on the artwork for The Batman Strikes!, I've been trying to include as many iconic, striking shots of The Batman as possible. I find myself both creating images out of the ether and looking to favorite stories of the past for inspiration. I heard recently that as they were starting work on Batman Begins, director Chris Nolan contacted the editorial staff at DC and had them all submit their favorite single image of Batman so he could get a sense of how they saw the essense of the character.
So I was wondering, what are your favorite images of the Batman? What are the covers or individual panels that stick in your mind as the essence of what the character is about?

One of the images in Batman stories past that always sticks out in my mind is how Bruce Wayne appears when he is in shadow. Norm Breyfogle did this masterfully. As an example there is one image in my mind when Bruce is with Tim at a hosipital after his parents are poisoned by Obeah Man. There is one panel that shows the upper half of Bruce's face in shadow and the effect is that of Batman's cowl (all white eyes in the same shape as they are when he is in the mask. If I dig, perhaps I can find an issue to scan to show you what I mean. Hopefully I am not too off topic with this, but it was the first thing I thought of when reading your thread!

I agree whole heartedly with Peev. Breyfogle covers were the first to pop into my head. His covers were some of the ones that have been committed to memory for me. For my money, I would reference the late 90's run of Detective Comics covers overall

GREAT topic Chris! Thanks for asking us fans our input! Along a similar line as peev, Its just a small thing, but I really enjoy when Bruce passes thru shadow and you see a glimmer of the bat. For example, just white eyes, or perhaps a silhouette behind him..shadow on his face...etc. In more contemporary terms, the Jim Lee Hush ledge pose provides bats with a very heroic feel...one he doesn't enjoy as often as a shadowy, mysterious one. I enjoyed Klaus Janson's cover on Batman: Gothic. See below as compared to a shot in begins. Its a typical, but iconic shot of Bats..flowing thru the air..powerful..literally bat-like. Swooping down upon his prey.

The image I thought of was the last panel of Bob Kane's two-page "origin" - crouched, looking to his right, with the cape unfurled behind him - that image is as striking today as it was 65 years ago.

i find this picture really cool: Ya, both that and the other one in the back of Hush Vol. 2 with the villains are great.
