Hello.
I am not only new to the forum, but also relatively new to comics in general.
I have been fan of Batman and Robin since I was a small kid (I am now 26) and have decided that I am going to start following the comics for not only Batman, but also the entire Gotham City universe.
Nightwing sounds very interesting as well as Birds of Prey.
The problem that I am having is that it's a bit overwhelming to get "caught up." Obviously, buying all of 600+ of the Batman series plus the countless other series isn't very practical - so my question is this:
What can a newbie do to get caught up?
I am looking into buying all of Nightwing in one big lot and starting Batman and Robin where they are currently and buy the graphic novels. Is this the most efficient route?
Any help/advice that the Batman comic veterans could offer would be greatly appreciated.
I apologize if these types of posts are discouraged or supposed to go somewhere else.
Thanks.

Here are a few trade paperbacks to pick up to get "caught up" on Batman:
Batman: Year 1 The Killing Joke A Death in the Family A Lonely Place of Dying Knightfall Contagion Cataclysm No Man's Land Mad Love Evolution Bruce Wayne: Murderer Bruce Wayne: Fugitive Officer Down Hush Death and the Maidens War Drums War Games
Those will pretty much bring you up to speed.
You will also want to pick up Dark Knight Returns, Batman: Black & White volumes 1 & 2, War on Crime, Long Halloween, and Dark Victory. Although these aren't in the normal storyline, they are must reads. Also, while not strictly a Batman story, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of Kingdom Come.

Fantastic. Thanks for the suggestions.
Safe to assume those are in the order I should read them?
I have already ordered Hush and The Long Halloween from Amazon as they both seemed quite interesting to me. I read Death in the Family along time ago and loved it.
Thanks again for your suggestions.
How much do the other books (Birds of Prey, Robin, Nightwing, etc) overlap with what is going on in Batman? Also - what about the other Batman series that are out there? Is all of this linear? It seem like there maybe 10-15 comics a month for the typical bat fan.

I think I've got them in the right order, but it's late, and it's been a loooong day. Anyone correctt the order if it's wrong. As for the crossover books. There are several Batgirl trade paperbacks out that do tie in fairly tight from No Man's Land on. I'm not a big reader of Nightwing, so I can't comment too much on those.
Overall there are a TON of Batbooks every month to pic up if you include Catwoman, Nightwing, Robin, and all the other titles. The one's that I listed will give you a pretty solid idea of what's been going on, but of course you're going to have to look into the Robin, Catwoman, Nightwing, Batgirl TPB's to get a better idea of the entire backstory. Also be aware that some of those TPB series are multiple issues. No Man's Land is like 5 books, and a few of the others are multiples as well.

Thanks again for the help Tim. I appreciate it.
Another annoying newbie question, if I may. Is there a specific day of the month that the new issues comes out like new media Tuesdays or does it vary from month to month?

Not a problem, glad to help. ;D As far as I know, just about every shop gets their new books on the shelves every Wed. The issues are staggered throughout the month, so one week you'll get a couple Bat comics, the next week you'll get a couple more, and so on. They tend to run on the same schedule from month to month except when the books have shipping delays for some reason. Check out this thread: legionsofgotham.proboards2.com/index.cgi?board=comics&action=display&n=1&thread=1779reideen updates it with the new books shipped each week. ~Tim

I liked the art in Hush the best so far I think. Lee does such a great job in all the details, and its not overly stylized. Plus its a must read, so if you don't have it yet, get it!!

Well thanks ;D I truely believe Hush has the best art I've seen in a really long time. I get annoyed when comic book art gets too stylized. I respect artists for trying different styles, but a lot of tht time, it jsut doesn't look like a comic book to me. I'm also just really picky with art Lee impressed me so much with his art. Exactly the style I look for and enjoy. Teamed with the great story.... hard to beat!

you guys got it about right with the trades but one arc just stands out to me that was left out. "Venom". i think that its one of the better arcs. also if you are trying to go in order it comes after "Year One", and still takes place during his first year as Batman.
