Maybe I'm getting old. Maybe I just didn't 'get it' or since this was the first issue, the team working on this is just 'laying the foundation' for things to come. Whatever. Either way, this was one of the worst books I've read this year. This ranks right behind Seaguy which is my nomination for #1 worst book of 2004. Avoid this book like the plague.

I liked it a lot. THey gave out free variant copies of Intimates #1 at Wizard World TX, so I read it while waiting in line. I have to admit at first I was a bit lost. But that afternoon there was an Intimates panel with Jim Lee, "Cammo", Joe Casey, Alex Sinclair and Rian Hughes. After Joe Casey explained the concept it made more sense. He explained it as what is going on in the minds of the teens at the school and what they go through, He said that there won't be arch-villians. One idea I liked alot was the text at the bottom of the pages that kind of gave you background about what was going on in the pages.

One idea I liked alot was the text at the bottom of the pages that kind of gave you background about what was going on in the pages. I got the part about it being focused on the kids learning to be heroes. I thought the text at the bottom was interesting. I think that's a concept that will be used by other writers honestly. It was almost like a running AIM conversation. The art was fine - I didn't have an issue with that. Each character is distinctive and the backgrounds/explosions/etc are all well done. My issue is that I found the characters to be uninteresting. Empty Vee was a fat invisible chick. When she became visible, she reminded me of Zepplin from the Valiant comics Harbinger series. Punch is Impulse - just replace his superspeed with the Punch doll. Duke is obviously a kid that is only there because his father is pushing him to be there - kind of like Emilio Esteves' "Jock" characer from Breakfast Club. Destra - has explosive fingernails? WTF? Sykes looks like just a Prof X type character with a translucent cone on his head. I honestly think this is supposed to be Superhero 90210. Who's gonna hook up next month?
