I try to take a look at most things that are out on the shelves each week. Even most Marvel titles. (Sorry, couldn't resist! ;D) I found a nice little book from Image last week that I think some of you will get a kick out of.
Most of you would recognize writer/artist Chris Giarrusso's style from the little comic strips that used to run at the back of Marvel's books - Marvel Comics' BULLPEN BITS. Those strips were turned into a few books called MINI MARVELS (I don't know how I missed those!), where he turned Marvel's classic characters - Wolverine, Spidey, Cap, etc, into kids with an attitude. (I love those little Bullpen Bits they used to do - they were today's generation's Hembeck strips!) I have a hunch that the Spiderman & Friends action figure line was, at least partially inspired by Bullpen Bits and Mini Marvels, but that's just my speculation.
G-MAN is something from a similar vein. These are the antics little kid superheroes. However, this is different from Mini Marvels because G-Man and his pals are not mini versions of already established heroes. These are his characters and his world to play with. If/when they cross over with established Image comics characters, like Spawn or Savage Dragon, they will be meeting the adult heroes - no kiddy Spawn or Dragons in this book!
The first part of the book is G-man's origin. The last 20 pages or so is a collection of comic strips that have been running in the back of Savage Dragon for a while now. Heck, I didn't even know that Savage Dragon was still being printed, so having all of them in one place is pretty nice, IMO. ;D
It has a very 'toon inspired look with clean lines and bright colors. Each character has a distinct look - some of which allow you to figure out the powers of the character just by looking at the costume! The stories are kid friendly, but kept me turning page after page in the store, so I figured I probably should just buy it so I could read the whole thing.
G-MAN #1 is a 64-page one shot. (Cover price is $5.95 - get it while you can!) I would love to see more of this series and I think that the $5.95 price tag was perfect for this collection. Sometimes, when I purchase something at a higher price tag, I really feel like I've made a mistake - that's not the case here.
You can check out Giarrusso's website, www.chrisgcomics.com and chat with him in his forum at www.comixfan.com/xfan/
