I am still trying to get a handle on what books I should be buying.
I am not interested in anything outside of the Batman realm, but even the "Batman only" books could end up being 15-20 books a week with the special titles.
I am just curious what books you guys buy monthly without fail?
My list as it stands right now is: Batman Robin Nightwing Birds of Prey Catwoman Detective Comics Gotham Knights
Are all of these necessary? What do you feel I have left out?

Superman/Batman is a very well written book. You mighht consider adding that one to your list.

Gotham Central is great, as well as Batgirl if you're a fan of the character. JLA would be good to start getting this month as it begins "crisis of concience", and OMAC Project and Villains United are both real good, OMAC features Batman, and Villains United features quite a few Batman villains.

I actually intended to buy Batgirl and accidently left it off the list. I am to 12 books now with these recommendations, not including the special books like Batman Year One: Scarecrow, Batman: Jekyll and Hyde and the upcoming Batman and Robin All Stars. Good times!

Strikes is IMO, the best Batman book on the shelves today. Others would be Outsiders and Teen Titans. You might try Titans GO! is a fun book as well.

I buy the following monthly:
Batman Detective Gotham Knights LOTDK Batgirl Amazing Spider-Man MK Spider-Man
Batgirl is an amazing character, largely because her background, but I haven't got into Nightwing or Robin, largely because of the art.
I bought Batman 15 years ago regularly, and again after Hush. However, looking at the pre-Hush Batman comics I'm glad I missed out on them again becuase the art was not right (IMO). Thing is the grittier art currently being used suits the medium better.

It's been more than a decade since I've bought Batman on a regular monthly basis. I've recently started picking up comics more frequently, but I tend to stick with specials and TPBs. I personality have a low threshold for the continuity and crossover madness that plagues the regular titles.
I've recently picked up Jekyll and Hyde, which is good. I also picked up Scarecrow: Year One, as well, not because I have a particular liking for the character (I don't) but because I liked the art and figured it would help get me fired up for Begins (as if I needed any more firing up).
I'm also reading Dark Detective because I'm old school and I loved the original arc from the '70s, but so far it's been a disappointment. If it doesn't improve by ish 3, I may move on and pretend it never happened (sort of like the movies 2010 and Godfather III).
I do read Batman Strikes, largely because I get it for my son and I very much plan to get All-Star though I fear it may be a little too guest-star heavy.
My ideal situation would be a Batman comic that:
-- had its own, separate continuity -- would not under any circumstances feature crossovers -- would feature characters that grow, change, and even stay dead -- would more or less adhere to the laws of physics as we know them, effectively taking place in a world like ours (i.e., no superpowered characters and few if any "science-induced" or mutant characters) -- would come out every two weeks
But I'm not picky or anything.

It usually depends on what issues are out, and how much cash I have at the time. Usually i get LOTDK, gotham knights, and Batman. Lately I've gotten the jekyll hyde series and misc. bat comics out.

I have a related question:
If you buy Batman, don't you then feel compelled to get Detective, Knights, LOTDK and all the spinoffs to keep everything straight?
I mean, is it even possible to read one without the others these days?
This isn't a rhetorical question. I'd really like to know how some of you do it ...

Currently I'm reading The Batman Strikes (lol), Batman and an occassional LODK. I very seldom enjoy Detective. I haven't read Nightwing for years, until Hester and Parks started on it, and Batgirl, while a good book, had to be trimmed from the list for $ reasons. I can only afford so much, y'know?

Reideen, I am SHOCKED that you are reading Batman Strikes. I would have never guessed. As someone who has just recently had their interests renewed in the world of Batman, I feel very compelled to go out and buy every book. I am going to sample everything at least once and then go from there. My local shop gives a 15% discount if my monthly pull list has over 10 titles, so we'll see if it's worth my while/$$$.

No, not really. It usually isnt too tough to fill in any missing points and often most are even explained or described for you in one way or another. Granted, in those books such as batman where you have so many titles and so many running stories crossing over, its tougher. But usually as long as you get "some" of the titles you can keep up. Unless its fully an obvious marketing ploy to sell books (like Superman and X-men used to) then dont bite, you will live and those are rarely "good stories" to begin with. Like anything else, the best advise is to only get what you like / enjoy. If you find yourself hopelesly bored or absoltely lost, then drop the book(s) or maybe even consider buying just the trades, "one shots" Etc.?

i buy: Justice League Unlimited (but i hardly read them. i don't like 'em as much as i used to) Teen Titans GO! The Batman Strikes! Gotham Central Superman/Batman Teen Titans and current miniseries: Batman: Jekyll and Hyde
and whatever else i get my grubby paws on. i really want to get other titles, but i have some kind of disorder that causes me to complete everything, so i fear that if i start collecting a series, i'll go broke getting the rest of them. anyway, i'll be picking up all star: batman and robin, the boy wonder (what a stupid and pointlessly long name, btw) next month. i'd highly recommend gotham central, but i can honestly say DO NOT BUY SUPERMAN/BATMAN UNTIL LOEB LEAVES!!! you'll be hopelessly lost and even if you weren't lost, you still wouldn''t enjoy the story. the only reason i still buy i because of that completist thing i told you about earlier. teen titans is also a good series.

If we're talking books in general, that's a different story entirely. Conan JLA JLA Classified JLA Elite (series ended) Green Lantern Rann/Thanagar War Villians United Nightwing Outsiders Teen Titans Shanna the She Devil Beowulf Omac Day of Vengence Samurai Imaginaries Flash Batman Strikes Batman Usually I'll try to find something new every month to try - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

... i have some kind of disorder that causes me to complete everything, so i fear that if i start collecting a series, i'll go broke getting the rest of them. I know exactly what you mean. I feel like I'm missing something by not getting the regular titles but I refuse to knuckle under and allow myself to get sucked in by all the crossovers. Follow up question for you guys: How do you manage reading, say, Batman, but not Detective? Don't you find them too closely connected?

I am still working on getting my pull list ready to go. Sorry Reideen, I thumbed through Batman Strikes and it was a casuality for this week. It looks good, but I gotta get the list down to 10. Batdan, I am finding it hard to keep up in general as I am playing catch up on the important stuff (Identity Crisis, Hush, Long Halloween etc) as well as reading the new books. Eventually, I am will likely just be buying all the versions as I am a sucker like that.
