Here's your "Ultimate Batman" survey. We all have things we love and don't love about Batman. Here's your chance to weigh in on what you think is the essence of the bat.
1. If you had to limit the Batfamily to five supporting characters, who would they be?
2. If you had to limit the Batvillains to seven, who would they be?
3. If you had to limit the number of other superheroes in the Batuniverse to five, who would they be?
Bonus. If you had to limit the number of Batvehicles to two, what would they be?

1. Alfred, Gordon, occasionally Robin and maybe Batgirl. I'd probably go with a pre-Nightwing teen Robin a la TAS.
2. Joker, Penguin, Two-Face, Catwoman, Riddler. Any others would depend on my mood (tossup between Ra's, Scarecrow, Deadshot, Hugo Strange, Ivy, Mr. Freeze.) I prefer characters that have no special powers. Makes it that much easier to suspend disbelief.
3. One side of me would love a continuity where only Batman existed. But if I were inclined to include other heroes, my A-list would be Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash and Green Lantern. I might be willing to toss in, say, Green Arrow, or some other one. Again, I like to keep it to the basics.
Bonus. Batmobile, definitely. Probably a Batwing/plane type vehicle. A Year One-esque hangglider would probably be good but I don't know if that would count as a vehicle, per se.
Bottom line, my attitude is less is more. Keep him in Gotham and keep it stripped down.

1. If you had to limit the Batfamily to five supporting characters, who would they be? -Alfred -Gordon -Robin (cheating: Dick Grayson, who would always stay 'Robin' but could get a Nightwing style attuitude adjustment later) -Catwoman -Batgirl
2. If you had to limit the Batvillains to seven, who would they be? -Joker -Two-Face -Riddler (the Batman style) -Poison Ivy -Penguin -Mr.Freeze (BTAS series style) -I don't consider her a villian, but since I can't think of a 7th: Harley Quinn
3. If you had to limit the number of other superheroes in the Batuniverse to five, who would they be? No one, I honestly I like crossovers as a special thing, I don't like the concept of 'co-exisiting' were someone can just show up in another comic on a whim (ie-Superman in Hush)... but if I have to pick 5: -Hellboy -the Goon -KamenRider -Sonambulo -Ash from Evil Dead
(see you need said "DC heroes"!!)
Bonus. If you had to limit the number of Batvehicles to two, what would they be? -Batmobile -Batwing

Alfred, Gordon, Robin, Nightwing, Oracle. 2= Joker, Ra's, Scarecrow, Two-Face, Freeze, Catwoman, Bane. 3= Superman and Wonder Woman are the only two that would really matter, "work", or make a difference when limited to so few.. Kinda gotta be all or none IMO. 4= Anything after the Bat-Pogostick is just gravy!! JK... Batmobile and some sort of realistic flying contraption such as a bat-copter.

1. Catwoman, Alfred, Batgirl, Huntress, Nightwing
2. Joker, Hush, Black Mask, Cornelius Stirk, Nyssa, Two-Face, Scarecrow
3. there really aren't any other heroes in the bat universe, who aren't bat family, only Superman.
Bonus: it couldn't be less than three. Batmobile, Batplane, Batboat. land, air, sea.

1. If you had to limit the Batfamily to five supporting characters, who would they be?
Alfred, Robin, Nightwing, Barbara Gordon, Catwoman (I really hate leaving Huntress off here)
2. If you had to limit the Batvillains to seven, who would they be?
Riddler, Joker, Scarecrow, Poison Ivy, Two Face, Firefly and since I am having a tough time with #7, I'll say Jason Todd
3. If you had to limit the number of other superheroes in the Batuniverse to five, who would they be?
I guess I'd say Superman, Wonderwoman, Flash, Green Arrow and Black Canary
Bonus. If you had to limit the number of Batvehicles to two, what would they be?
Batmobile and Batwing

Alfred, Catwoman, Nightwing, Gordon, Robin
2. If you had to limit the Batvillains to seven, who would they be?
The Joker, Ra's Al Ghul (the original), Bane (I know, but I want him to come back), Two-Face, The Penguin, Scarecrow, and Black Mask
3. If you had to limit the number of other superheroes in the Batuniverse to five, who would they be?
Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, and Hawkman
Bonus. If you had to limit the number of Batvehicles to two, what would they be?
The Batmobile (duh) and the Bat-copter (always made more sense than a plane while patroling Gotham City)

1. Alfred, Commissioner Gordon, Barbara Gordon (Oracle/ex-Batgirl), Robin III, Nightwing. 2. This one's hard.. Joker, Two-Face, Killer Croc, Mr. Freeze, Catwoman, Bane, Ra's. 3. Superman, Green Arrow, The Question... and for the two last I choose The Green Hornet & The Shadow, even if they don't really exist anymore.. or do they? Bonus: The Batmobile & The Batwing.. that one was easy

Well, I gotta tell you: After seeing Begins, I would definitely round out my seven with Scarecrow and Ra's.
(Meaning Deadshot, Freeze, Ivy and Hugo Strange would miss the cut)

1. If you had to limit the Batfamily to five supporting characters, who would they be?
Alfred is, of course, a must- no Bat-book is the same without him, period. As for the other four, you might be surprised at my answer- Comissioner Gordon, Renée Montoya, Harvey Bullock and Barbara/Batgirl/Oracle. Huh, you say?
I've always thought Batman worked best alone. The guy is completely obsessed with ruling the night- does that sound like the kind of person who would become a father? The surrogate-family situation works well enough for me, but I could live without it.
The cops (and the stories of Gotham Central) are characters who can work with Batman, but not in a 'side kick' way. Also, Batman hasn't taken any of them in- they've all chosen the career, and Bats respects that. The conflicts between him an the police were always a high point for me as well. As for my choices, Gordon is obvious, and Bullock and Montoya are, in my opinion, the two best defined police officers character-wise. Plus, the comics need more gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgendered characters.
As for Batgirl, because I've always thought of her as an agent independant of Batman (mostly due to the influence of the old 60's series and BTAS), I've always thought the possibilities were more interesting than when they were partnered up and buddy-buddy in the Batcave. It also means the possibility of romance is greater. She also ties in well with Gordon, and besides, I adore the Oracle character.
2. If you had to limit the Batvillains to seven, who would they be?
This is a tricky one, as Bats has the best Rogues Gallery out there (the lack of ladies puts Spidey in second place). On the plus side it means the AWFUL Hush and Jason/Red Hood characters will never exist (evil laughter). Assuming this is referring only to costumed villains (I want Carmine Falcone and Rupert Thorne on here too), I choose:
-The Joker -Catwoman -Ras Al Ghul -Two Face -The Scarecrow -Poison Ivy -Penguin
The Riddler is a characters who would fit in well (especially with better backstories), but was edged out in favour of more interesting villains.
You can't have a Batman without a Joker, but I've always believed Catwoman is equally important (especially if this new universe were being recreated from scratch). Ras Al Ghul is also the global threat that Batman sorely needs, and Two Face is a crucial part of Batman's early years.
As for Penguin, I love his 90's casting as a crime lord, and I think this newer incarnation would be a great adversary for Batman in the early years. Scarecrow is a real threat to Batman, and his psychological profile fits the themes of the show to a T.
Poison Ivy has always been my favourite, and serves as a great superpowered archnemesis. She's also something of a tragic figure in lieu of Mr. Freeze, but not as connected to Batman as Two Face (I'd like this element to be played up more, as long as it doesn't result in HORRENDOUSLY OUT OF CHARACTER BEHAVIOR, HINT, HINT, GOTHAM KNIGHTS WRITERS!). And, c'mon, KILLER PLANTS!
There are TONS of other villains I want, but aren't as crucial to the mythos, even if they are a ton of fun (sorry Harley).
3. If you had to limit the number of other superheroes in the Batuniverse to five, who would they be?
This one was easier for me- Superman, Black Canary and nobody else. I don't see Bats as much of a team player, and I don't really enjoy the notion of his teaming up with every freakin' character in the DC Universe. 90% of the good team up scenarios have been done.
However, Bats' relationship with Superman can be an integral part of the comics, so I think the possibility should be there. Also, Batgirl needs a superhero gal-pal, and since Canary is FAR more believable than characters like Wonder Woman, she gets included too.
Bonus. If you had to limit the number of Batvehicles to two, what would they be?
The Batmobile and the Batcycle. I love the other gadgets, but in a more realistic, down-to-earth Gotham city with just 7 bad guys and two heroes, I think someone would catch on and decide to, say, follow the huge oversized bat-shaped jet plane/boat/helicopter/whatever.

1. Batgirl (Barbra not accpected by Batman), Robin (Dick Grayson), Huntress(Catwoman and batmans Daughter), Catwoman, Alfred and if i could choose more Harvey Dent and Gordon.
2. Joker, Harley Quinn, Scarecrow (Begins type version), Two-Face, Posion Ivy, Baby Doll, Ra's Al Ghul.
3. None but at a push Superman, Wonder Woman, Black Canary. Though it never seems right having gotham and a real character like batman being in a world surrounded by super people.
Bonus. batmobile (tank Version like begins), batwing.

I'm with you Batdan. Her featured episode was brilliant (the first one, where she looked like a Tiny Toon and was played by Rachel's boss from 'Friends'), but her character would not work in any other stories (as Love is a Croc proved). Following the scene in the hall of mirrors, she becomes pointless, as her main internal conflict has already been dealt with as well as it possibly could be.
Unlike Mr. Freeze, who, after losing his wife, was still super-powerful, Baby Doll would no longer pose a real threat to Batman (again, as Love is a Croc proved). That's why she hasn't been adapted into continuity as Harley has, and why she never (to my recollection) appeared in more than a cameo in any of the Adventure books.
Oops, didn't mean to get all confrontational...I'll chalk it up to a long day at work, and the fact that Father's Day is coming up. Sorry : )

Yeah, maybe batdan but i've always enjoyed his relationship with bats. They are both the smartest minds on the JLA and seem to have strong respect for one another. Also both are guilty of spying on thier colleagues for info. AND both are great detectives.

And MM was a backup feature in Detective decades ago, if I recall. I still have issues with Batman living in the same world as a green man from Mars.
But that's just me. A lot of people love J'onn. I'm not trying to knock him per se.

I agree, Batdan- I think Bats is much better off without wacky space aliens floating around. Then again, if we can believe Orca and Scarebeast, I suppose we can believe Martian Manhunter... okay, bad examples...
