I have recently got into my totally shway Masterpiece Batman set, and read for the first time, the old comic book reprint that it came with. And to my suprise, Bruce Wayne smokes a pipe! That kinda seems odd, considering that the Batman of old was supposed to be a positive role model for kids, not to mention a paragon of human perfection. It just seems so out of place to see Batman smoking a pipe.

Back in the day smoking wasn't the taboo it's become today. In fact, smoking a pipe was seen as the height of sophistication, something a millionaire playboy would most definitely do.

The first Flash (Jay Garrick) gained his powers in a tobacco-related incident. Times really do change (I'll betcha within a couple years, the introduction of Batwoman and Batgirl 1 to assert the masculinity of the male leads will be looked down upon the same way).

I guess you fellers are right. But, other questions, From what I saw it never said what Thomas Wayne did for a living. I know from watching B:ATS that he was a Doctor and head of Wayne Pharmaceuticals, later part of Wayne Enterprises(or is it Wayne Industries?) is that true in the comics, or was that created for the cartoon to explain how Bruce became a millionaire(later billionaire) playboy/crimefighter?

I'm not exactly certain...but I know by 1948 it was known that Thomas Wayne was a doctor.

I think in some stories, it is said that Thomas Wayne was a wealthy doctor and that Bruce himself formed the company Wayne Enterprises with Lucius Fox. In Batman Begins, Thomas Wayne apparently founded and owned Wayne Enterprises, but left its management to others while he worked as a doctor. I think the former is the widely accepted explanation in current comic continuity, but I'm not certain.

Thomas Wayne was a medical doctor who inherited everything. Judge Solomon Wayne made alot of money in real estate and formed Wayne Shipping and Wayne Chemical (later Wayne Pharmaceutacal), subsidiaries of WayneCorp. Solomon Wayne also founded the Wayne Foundation, and had built the tallest building of the time, The Wayne Building. WayneCorp was later changed to Wayne Enterprises after adding even more subsidiaries: Wayne Industries, Wayne Tech, Wayne Aviation and Aerospace.

Hero point to you, good sir. BTW, is it rumor that Bruce Wayne was not the first Batman, and that he carried on a family legacy?

Hero point to you, good sir. BTW, is it rumor that Bruce Wayne was not the first Batman, and that he carried on a family legacy? True - but in name only. In the 1950's version of the origin of the Batman costume, Dr. Thomas Wayne wore a Bat Man costume to a Halloween party. The party is crashed by gangsters who start robbing the guests. They take Dr. Wayne with them after their ringleader, Lew Moxon, gets shot. Wayne busts up the gang and Moxon swears revenge. He hires hitman Joe Chill to kill Wayne and make it look like a mugging. Bruce ends up putting the Bat Man costume on as a spare and it scares Joe Chill into either a whirlpool or a cavern in the Batcave because he's so scared that the ghost of Dr Thomas Wayne has come back to kill him. LOG member Batwulf did a custom of this figure for LOG's custom contest last year - it was very well done. Perhaps he'll post a pic here....
