all-time greatest writer, this is a real tough decision, but i would go with Grant. the stories he's written and his runs on Shadow of the bat and Detective were fantastic. O'Neill is also close in my eyes. as is every writer listed though.
who and why?

I'll go with Miller because he wrote the two best Batman stories, in my opinion: DKR and Year One. These are transcendent works (even if DK2, BM/Spawn and All-Star are crap).
I'd give honorable mention to O'Neil and Steve Englehart.

Like you have to ask. Frank Miller for Year One and DKR. Loeb came in second with The Long Halloween and Hush.
We both owe these guys for Begins, since it was some of their work that helped inspire it.

No voting for me, but...FRANK. MILLER. Like Batdan said, he wrote the 2 best Bat-stories EVER. Plus I like his All-Star Batman and Robin a lot, too. And Loeb did come in second with me, too, because he is a very talented writer, too, having written Long Halloween, Dark Victory, Hush, and the Halloween specials, all of which are great stories, if not as influential as Miller's.

Steve Englehart. I loved his run in Detective Comics from 1977-78.

I voted for Dennis O'Neil because I think his work has stood the test of time. Steve Englehart did an excellent job as well, but his run was too short.
