I'm trying to decide whether to get Superman: For Tomorrow, the 12-issue(?) Superman story by Brian Azzarello and Jim Lee. I want to read it because I obviously love Jim Lee, and Azzarello's other Superman story, Lex Luthor: Man of Steel was excellent. However, what I've heard about the story on this one generally has not been too good, or, in some cases, terrible. Can anyone tell me if Superman: For Tomorrow is worth picking up?

Its the story that had good intentions but never got it in the end. I gave it a 2.5/5. Jim Lee's art is great, but don't waste your money on art alone.
There's other great Superman stories like For All Seasons, and currently with All Star Superman.
Really good Superman issues are coming too. I'd start with the Adventures of Superman #648 which'll be out the 25th of this month and go from there to All Star Superman #1, and #2 which will come out this Wednesday (or Thursday) and go from there to next month.
Also, stay away from Birthright. Same as For Tomorrow, confusing, good intentions at start but not in the finish.
Have more questions? Ask 'em.

Yeah stay away from this tale. Superman For All Seasons is great, as well as Superman Red Son, and I also really liked Superman Infinite City which had spectacular artwork IMO.
