Well IMO. Being as specific as possible in regards to "what to get from that list"...

DC:
-Alex Ross' "JUSTICE" Series (cant go wrong! Especially if your'e a JLU fan!)
-"Batman and the Monster Men" series (has been decent so far"
-Batman (ongoing)
-Superman/Batman (because it's supes and bats! but quality goes back and forth?)
-Infinite Crisis series (and secret files issues always fun and informative. maybe just skim through it at store)
-LOTDK (up and down quality but ending soon so could ignore)
-Detective, Nightwing, Robin, and Birds of Prey (all good choices and worthwhile on a regular basis but quality and "importance" varies greatly issue to issue)
-JSA and Catwoman have been good and are regularly "praised" but I havnt read either for some time.

Marvel:
-Daredevil (ongoing and has been really good for quite a while now)
-Punisher (ongoing. new story arc should begin Feb-Mar? like Bats/Supes, quality varies)
-Cant really coment on any of the Spidey titles listed. Havnt read any Spidey for loong time.. this new stuff could be good or bad?

Naturally all this is going purely off my own tastes and experience. But on a limited budget, many thigs could be scratched w/o much loss or heartache. Stick with biggies / primaries and you cant go wrong IMO.

What about X-Men? Because I'm wondering wheather to get either Astonishing or Ultimate. Astonishing is the still the big thing but it doesn't have all the main characters that Ultimate has.

hmmm... X-men fall into the same catagory with me as Spiderman. Was a big fan and regular reader for several years (80's-90's) till the emphasis was put on gimicks/marketing/sales Etc.
So I'm not much help. I would wager if youre a "newbie", maybe more convenient to go with the Ultimate line?

if you're going to read marvel just read Daredevil, New Avengers, Astonishing, and the x-books that cover Apocalypse's return. DC is the better company in my opinion, read most Crisis related books and other characters you like. and i also read Fathom and Cannon Hawke, and Witchblade and Darkness. those 4 books always deliver. and i'm a star wars fan, but even if you're not and you liked the game (which is almost impossible not to), read Knights of the Old Republic.

I've enjoyed most of the Marvel movies, but the characters have never interested me enough to start checking out their comics. Batman and Robin are the only characters that got me to pick up that first Batman comic about a year ago and some of the events and others in DC have been fun to read. But for Marvel, not really interested.

Go with Superman Confidental. Tim Sale is doing the art and its really starting to get good. Issue #5 comes out in June I believe so you have time to catch up on the series.!

To elaborate on what I said earlier: take all the ones that don't have or have something to do with Batman in them and throw them away!!!!!
