I just picked up the Knightfall graphic novels (better late than never right?) I'm reading the first book and they keep refering to how Batman/Bruce is in weak health after what he has just gone through and that Bane attacked Azrael thinking it was Batman in the costume, I don't read comics just the novels, what did I miss here?

Knightfall is the classic Batman story where Bane breaks Batman's back in the middle of Gotham City. When they refer to him being weak, they are probably referring to Batman being broke both in mind and body after what Bane had done to him. It's a great story, hope you enjoy the rest of it!

What books did you get? Because Bruce's back being broken, thus him being weak, happens in book 1. It seems from what you said that you started on book 2.

I've only read volume 1, but I believe Bruce had been very sick before Knightfall started, and is recovering when Bane breaks the inmates out of Arkham. So not only does he have to defeat every criminal who escaped from Arkham with no rest, but he's sick and exhausted already.

It's Vol. 1, I finished reading it and it appears he's just weak and exhausted from fighting so many villains before the Arkham breakout, like I said they mention that Bane thought it was Bruce in the Batsuit but it was actually Jean Paul (Azrael) they don't show that part though.

well for the past few years in the batman universe before knightfall, bruce wayne had been pushing himself too far he rarely slept (he often did some kind of powernap for 30 minutes) some kind of sleep method he knew of that was meditation between sleep and awakeness and seemed to give him the equivalent of 4 hours sleep i remember alfred continually trying to get him to rest, get some sleep bane came out a few issues before knightfall, i remember when he broke croc's arm then knightfall began (and i dont want to spoil it for you like the other's have if you haven't finished the first one, but now that you said you have finished it) not that you don't already know that bane breaks batman (the REAL batman) but when the actual novel of knightfall starts, the 2nd or 3rd page he breaks the prisoners out of arkham at this point, batman has already continually been pushing himself, and weakening himself letting fewer people in (personally) you should try to read a few issues before knightfall, its part of the storyline would also recommend reading vengeance of bane to get his origin, sword of azrael to get his (and shows how batman met him, in the issues before knightfall, azrael was helping batman in a different costume, because batman gave him a job and blah blah blah) also would read the 4 issue graphic novel of legends of the dark knight "Venom" i like venom a lot and it helps explain the serum, where it was created, how it was used to make soldiers bane presumably was experimented on when he was in prison, serving time for a crime his father committed
ANWYAY yes batman had been weak before knightfall, and then all the prisoners came out, he was super super super weak to find bane waiting for him in the batcave hope this helps, please correct me if i'm wrong, going by memory here
