DC NAMES MATTEL AS OFFICAL TOYMAKER According to Variety Mattel has been named as the “official toymaker“ for DC Comics. The move comes shortly after the announcement made during this year’s licensing show that Mattel had been named as the global master toy licensee for both Sped Racer and The Dark Knight, Warner Bros.’ two major genre films coming next summer, and continues the relationship between the companies that began with the Harry Potter film franchise, and has included Batman Begins and Superman Returns, DC’s comics (the DC Super Heroes line), as well as the animated properties The Batman and Justice League Unlimited. This new deal however, covers everything in the DC Comics library, past and future films and animated properties. Variety reports that Mattel is looking to create a “DC Superheroes-branded section” in toy aisles, with DC-themed tie ins to Mattel’s other properties, such as Hot Wheels, Radica, Fisher-Price, Tyco and Mattel Games. Mattel is reportedly looking to produce toys and lines based on DC properties for both kids and toy collectors. Financial terms of the relationship were not released. In January of this year, Marvel signed a similar five year deal with rival toymaker Hasbro. Look for more on this story later today, as we talk to DC Direct’s Georg Brewer about the relationship and its implications for DC’s in-house toy line.
