Well, here are the basics every Batfan should check out: Year One Dark Knight Returns Dark Knight Strikes Again The Long Halloween Dark Victory Hush Haunted Knight
And some other good stories: Strange Apparitions The Killing Joke Knightfall No Man's Land A Death in the Family The Monster Men The Mad Monk Detective Death and the City
And if you're into Year One type stories: Four of a Kind Snow The Man Who Laughs
Just some suggestions.

i would agree with all of those except for Dark Knight Strikes Again. TERRIBLE. NONSENSE. also check out Batman: Ego and other Tails Gotham by Gaslight - one of the best endings i've read! Dark Detective False Faces is pretty good, but The Long Halloween, as mentioned by All Star is by far the greatest batman story ever written.

yeah, Venom is great. also any Nightwing trade before OYL is fantastic as that entire run was phenomenal. Death and the Maidens is fantastic as well. plus everything listed except DKSA. TDKR though is definitely worth reading. A Lonely Place For Dying is also good.

Graphic Novels Arkham Asylum Dark Knight Returns Year One I agree Son of the Demon Birth of the Demon and Bride of the Demon perhaps. Red Rain maybe (elseworlds) Trades The Cult Venom A death in the Family A lonely Place of Dying perhaps Long Halloween Gotham By Gaslight (elseworlds) The Killing Joke Shaman perhaps
There is no end. Pick the 3-4 most repeated titles and you cant go wrong.

the ones of got already are:
arkham asylum dark knight returns hush batman: harley and ivy batman: venom batman: the long halloween
im definetly going to get 'year one' and even though most of you guys against 'dark knight strikes again' i think its something that i better check out for myself sometime soon. Im still on the look out for 'the man who laughs' havent seen it anywhere
and i even though it isn't strictly batman related i would still love to get my hands on 'Infinite Crisis'

Batman: Harley and Ivy was good. There are other good stories that feature the Dark Knight that are worth note: Superman: Red Son Kingdom Come What if Stan Lee imagined the DC Universe? Gotham County Line (A real good one) Hush Returns Under the Hood Batman and Spawn (Todd MacFarlane drew a real sick Dark Knight to compliment his Spawn char.)

Bar none BATMAN STRANGE APPARITIONS which collects the Englehart and Rogers run on BATMAN and DETECTIVE in the 1970's truly the most definite storytelling before BATMAN: YEAR ONE and BATMAN THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS

I WOULD SAY HUSH, THE LONG HALLOWEEN, AND THE KILLING JOKE ARE A FEW GREAT ONES. AS FOR THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS, WELL, NOT ONLY WOULD I NOT RECOMMEND IT, I THINK THAT FRANK MILLER SHOULD NEVER HAVE DONE BATMAN!

The Dark Knight Strikes Again should not have been done, but The Dark Knight Returns is one of the best Elseworlds Batman stories ever made. and there's no need to "shout", we can read and understand you just fine without caps.

Not sure if it would be considered a graphic novel or a one-shot, but 'Batman: Ego' by Darwyn Cooke is one of the best I've ever read.

Year One, The Long Halloween and Dark Victory serve as a solid origin for Batman. Read those three if you are new to the character. Additionaly, Arkham Asylum and The Killing Joke are quite good as well. There are many others, but those are the stand outs for me.

I'd like to put in a vote for 'Faces' by Matt Wagner.
Best Two-Face story I ever read.
