Kelsey is the cover artist for a number of the new 'Batman Adventures' issues. He's currently working on pencilling an upcoming issue, written by Jason Hall! See our Jason Hall interview in this forum, as well!

LoG: You've done some amazing cover work on 'Batman Adventures'. How did you come to work on the book?
Kelsey Shannon: You know, I can’t remember how I got the job. I think it had to do with Mark Chiarello liking the work I did on “Bastard Samurai” (with Mike Oeming and Miles Gunter) for Image. The style I was doing for that book was similar to Batman Adventures. I guess Mark thought it would be a good match.
LoG: You've done pencil work on an upcoming issue, with story by Jason Hall. What can you tell us about this issue? Did you read Jason's 'Early Thaw' story in preparation?
Kelsey Shannon: I still think of Mr. Freeze as the character from “Heart of Ice”. The emotional undercurrents that Dini and Timm created for the character set the standard for how Freeze should be handled, not just in the Animated Universe, but as a whole. It’s quite intimidating to take a character that has been done so well in the past and try and do it better. I can say that Jason (Hall) and I respect the character a great deal and I think we’ve done something that the fans will remember as part of the Freeze chronology.
LoG: You have a very distinctive style to your art. What influenced the development of your style? Did you have to alter your style at all to work on this book?
Kelsey Shannon:I have a great many influences. Way to many to put in any kind of list. Of course you may have noticed that I am heavily influenced by animation. I’ve always loved the “Bruce Timm” style and now I guess you can say the “Timm/Murakami” style, but it’s deceptively simple. It has been a bit of a challenge to follow a style guide and you’ll probably notice me straying from it a tad, but I think that style is part of the fun of doing this book.
LoG: Are you a fan of the animated Batman universe? Do you watch Justice League? Teen Titans? Batman: The Animated Series? Batman Beyond?
Kelsey Shannon: I don’t watch TV anymore so I don’t catch anything current. I watched the original show and some of Superman and Batman beyond. Never the less, I’m a huge fan of the universe and I think more comics should take a cue from how this franchise is done. I would love to see more comics done like the Batman Adventures books.
LoG: Do you collect Batman toys? If so, which ones?
Kelsey Shannon: I bought a Mr. Freeze toy for Dave Johnson once. Other than that I don’t really mess around with toys.
LoG: Do you have a favorite bat-villian? Is there a particular villian you enjoy or would enjoy drawing, and why?
Kelsey Shannon: Mr. Freeze is my favorite and I’m drawing him right now. I guess I can stop after this.
