Because of the recent interview with BYTB and Yvonne Craig, I wanted to see if there was anything to tie into it since I'am a member too of BYTB. So I found it:
The 1967 6-minute pilot reel to the pitched spin-off to the '66 Batman TV show: Batgirl!
PLOT: In a plot to kidnap another billionaire, Killer Moth fights and captures the Dynamic Duo of Batman and Robin. Who will save them? Only the damsel know as BATGIRL!
REVIEW: Where can I start? Well this IS still the '60s Batman we all know. Still camp, pure '60s. But it ain't Batman this focuses on, it's Batgirl. The idea behind a Batgirl spin-off and why she was created, like many other female heroines, to be role models for women and reflect what was going on in the '60s in shown here when the narrator explains the women in Gotham leading up to Barbara Gordon.
This is camp. Of course. I mean how in the hell can no one see that those four men with antennas on their heads were Killer Moth and his men?! Plus Batman and Robin being in a balloon acting as a coccon was cheap (I know: '60s), the introduction and fights with Batgirl were laughable but the only true moment that was funny was Batman flirting with Batgirl. THAT'S ADAM WEST FOR YA!
Because it's short, and its a special tie-in for the interview BYTB did, no rating will be given.

Pretty cool read, thanks for posting this. Do you know if there is a link to this 6 minute pilot anywhere on the web? It would be neat to check out. Sounds like they were sticking to her origin pretty good though with using Killer Moth...

The Batgirl intro was camp, as was the regular series, but it did stick to the comic book story. The main things that I like about it: Barbara changes to Batgirl exactly like in the comic book story. Her skirt becomes her cape, and her beret becomes her cowl. Also, the cowl was more like the comics, in as much as the front of the cowl which was black, was pointed like in the book. It was later rounded after they discovered that the points left imprints on Yvonne's cheeks when she took the cowl off.

The main thing I have to say about the Batgirl pilot is that it should have led to a series, not having the character crammed into an abbreviated Bat series. I was VERY disappointed at what I saw in the fall of 1967. I stopped watching the show at the end of that year, and still have not seen a couple of the 1968 episodes even today.
One nice touch is that the optical effects were used without a background, like in the first season of Batman. In retrospect, Yvonne Craig truly deserved better. As I get older, I appreciate her work all the more!!

I was 2 in '67 and started watching Batman a year or two later. 'Course I had no idea what a rerun was at that age. You are so lucky to have those memories. Do you know where one could "find" the Batgirl pilot or at least pics?

IF they EVER put out the series on DVD, this pilot HAS TO BE INCLUDED ON THE SEASON 3 DVD SET!!!

I have a digital copy of this and would happily upload it and post a link here to share for anyone who wants to see it, just as long as it's okay by the mods to do so...

This pilot last time I checked was on you tube. Also I dont see why they called this BATGIRL. Batgirl really didnt do anything in the show. She sat on the librarians desk alot. She didnt seem to be in the forefront like everyone else said she was. IT was still Batman and Robin that saved the day. Seemed more like a regular ep just crammed into 6-7mins.

Do you know where one could "find" the Batgirl pilot or at least pics? I saw the series when it premiered on 12 January 1966. And believe me, it was an exciting time! I may cover this on my Catfan site, and have a special section devoted to Jill St. John, who played Molly ("Other Ladies").
And Matt, is this '60s Bat site ready yet? I am VERY interested! When the idea of Batgirl surfaced in 1967, I initially did not like the idea of her. But that was before I loved women. Today, I find her very interesting indeed! And I was blessed to meet three of them in Detroit in May 2006!There was also a '67 Batgirl present (Katie), but I cannot find a photo of her. I'll locate one and post it of her (gotta go to work now).

Katie really nailed down the Yvonne Craig look for Batgirl! No question! I was really impressed with her enthusiasm as well!
