Frank, I would agree with Casimir - most of the time, I want that figure out of the package and standing on the shelf. How the figure is posed and displayed is a big part of the fun of owning it, and that is how it becomes my figure, so to speak. But, as I said in my earlier post, this Grundy may prove to be the exception - that package is a mind-blower! ;D

ill be attending ww in chicago...if they have them, Ill buy at least 3 more for people on here. So lets hope they come to chicago. If possible, could I be #3? Or if any kind soul going that can pick me up one, I'd appreciate it. I will be going to the Con next year for sure and can return the favor as well as offer help to forum members who can't go. Just couldn't make it this year....Pearl Jam decided to do a show in my area that weekend. I slightly agree with Casimir. I like to first and foremost have my toys in package. But then I usually get an extra to open. So I can appreciate both sides. Kolawan

OK, maybe I should reiterate my former statement. What I meant to say was: not that collectors NEVER remove toys from a package, but a large majority DO buy two packages - one to keep and one to open. Now that bit of info comes from our research dept. here at Mattel. I'm sure that the mass market lines I've worked on like The Batman and JLU: you guys tore through the package like a hot knife through butter. That's fine, I have no problem with that since the strategy for packaging at mass is too have a compelling package that makes you want to buy the toy. Also, for you guys who don't care if the toy comes in the most boring package ever, as long as you get the toy, the packaging is not designed just for you. The majority of sales for all the stuff I do does not come from collectors but from Mom. If little Jimmy sees some eye candy hanging on a peg, its mom who's going to buy it for him. Packaging at mass is just advertising, and that's the hardcore truth of it.
However, that's does not mean that both Ben and I are not going to try and create a totally cool package that enhances the experience of buying and owning a particular toy - even if the experience is fleeting once the package has been torn into. Now, in regards to ComicCon and other super exclusive toys, I'll stick to my former statement: The majority of most collectors do not open the package, and here's the amendment to this statement, if its a highly exclusive toy. Before any of you disagree, consider Toyfare magazine's treatment of last year's Catwoman ComicCon exclusive (November issue). The figure made it to the number 1 and number 4 spot for "TOP 10 HOTTEST ACTION FIGURES." Notice that both spots has a photo of figure in the package. Now, can any of you remember the last time Toyfare magazine has an image of the action figure in the package, and it didn't happen once but twice on the same page. What that tells me is that the guys over at Toyfare either didn't have the heart to tear into the window box, OR they actually considered the figure and the package to be one and the same. I'm thinking its the latter. At any rate, if you guys score a Grundy (I hope that many of you do) I'm positive that when you hold it in your hands, pull the draw string, watch the insert shake, pour over all the insane detail I put into the art, you'll be extremely challenged to open it. Well, that's my two cents – actually after reading what I just wrote, I thinks it's more like a buck and a quarter. Until next time, faithfully yours, Frank Varela

Thanks for clarifying that for the fans, Frank! I agree with you..and the research...in the case of chase figures and convention exclusives, it is far more likely that a fan will keep it in package! I certainly do

[shadow=purple,left,300]I think the packaging is cool. What I'm liking about Mattel's recent exclusives is the amount of detail which has gone into the packaging and accessories. Grundy is better than Catwoman, and even though my Catwoman came out of the box, I still kept the packaging. While I probably won't dish out any extra cash for Grundy, namely because I've been lax on collecting JL figures, I'd keep him in his packaging just for the special effects. It makes for a perfect display.[/shadow]

I'm thinking its the latter. Couldn't agree more Frank. I've been a toy collector/fan since the vintage Superpowers line and am a lifelong Batman/JL/Superman/DC/Star Wars, and anything else that I like collector. Bar none, the Comic Con Catwoman has been the nicest collectible I've ever laid eyes on (and I don't even own the 24k gold version yet.) It looks as if the Grundy figure will top that. Thanks for your tremendous effort in going above our expectations! Kolawan

I'm an opener first and foremost but this is one of those very rare occurences where I will keep the figure packaged (assuming I can get one). The packaging is just that impressive, IMO.
Having said that, I did open the Catwoman exclusive. The Catwoman packaging did make for a very nice display piece as well but I still think it looks better opened and standing next to the rest of my 'The Batman' figures.

Greetings
I certainly think the Grundy Package is a work of art. A beautiful display piece that is interactive! But...Grundy is most certainly coming out of the box for me. I only hope the package is set up in a way that Grundy can be taken out without the package being destroyed. The Catwoman exclusive from last year, came out of the box just fine...(her stand too). I've kept the box o return her to it if need be...
Why am I taking Grundy out of the box? Well the number one reason is for my son. He has a HUGE collection of almost every JL and JLU figure made. And yes, he PLAYS with them... And I really want to see Grundy standing next to Luthor, Copperhead, Ultra Humanite....and attempt to take down the Justice League.
Can't wait to get my hands on Grundy.

so did I hear right a few message boards ago that this figure would be available in a carded multi-pack as a Target exclusive. I swear I read that, along with the upcoming Doomsday fig. Hopefully one of you guys can confirm this. Or just shoot me down, haha.

Doomsday is scheduled for release this fall in a special six figure set exclusive to Target stores
