This is so sad! He did so much for animals and changing the stigmas attached to so many! How many people now having a better understanding a healthy respect instead of fear for croc's. I am sure most do! Thanks Steve you will be missed. We need more naturalist like you!!

R.I.P
Thats really a shame. Not entirely unpredictable given his lifestyle, but really too bad. My heart certainly goes out to his poor children and family.

R.I.P. Croc Hunter.
I'm not really sure what to say. I'm shocked, but I'm not. He has done some crazy $#!t, but I never thought it would actually happen. My thoughts also go out to his family.

This is terrible news. All because of an accident that could have been avoided. Steve Irwin may have been one of the most famous animal documenters I've witnessed. My wishes to his family. May he rest in peace.

[shadow=purple,left,300]Unfortunately, this was a freak accident. Very rarely do people die from stingray wounds. In this case, Steve was impailed through the heart, a very rare occurrence. It wasn't like he was doing any dangerous stunt- he was filming the reef for a documentary.
This is upsetting news [/shadow]

Yeah, that is sad. I don't think I can say anything that hasn't been said but maybe the children will take a page from their father when they decide to go out into the reef and wear a rubber suit. No joke.

Lucky enough to have briefly met the guy earlier this year as his Zoo is not far from my Home and my Family goes there fairly regularly. What you saw of Steve on Telly was what he was really like,a genuine, enthusiatic and caring individual. It's a real state of shock here in Oz i can assure you and the world will certainly miss the"Wildlife Warrior"as he loved to be called. I am confident his legacy will live on!

If he could of chosen which way to go, this probably would have been it. The spokesperson on the news said that he was probably killed instantly. He was doing what he loved, and which the animals he loved.. It's just amazing that with all the close calls he's had in the past, that THIS would be the way to go. I will miss him, and his family will be in my prayers.

FYI his agent or someone is supposed to be on Larry King tonight.
They were filming a documentary at the time and the incident was filmed. The debate now is whether or not the footage will get leaked (God I hope not).
Mr. Irwin had swam over the stingray (I believe towards the camera boat?) and as he crossed over the ray it brought it's tail up piercing his chest. Mr. Irwin was alert and aware of what had happened. "He removed the barb and minutes later he was gone". Just too bad.
