OK, I'm sorry if I'm going about this the wrong way, but I didn't know how else to go about it. I'm confused about characters in the DCU. specifically Kalibak, Mr Miracle & Orion. I looked online to try and find the origin of Miracle, I saw that he is Darkseid's son and he was traded to Highfather in the New Genesis war, but I found articles saying Kalibak is the first AND second son of Darkseid, Was Kalibak traded for Miracle or Orion? I'm hiighly confused. Any help would be appreciated

This thread should either go to the General DC Universe or Comic Book Cave pages.

Okay, discounting the somewhat muddled continuity of the whole New Gods saga, it basically boils down like this:
Ever since the fall of the Old Gods, the New Gods have been at war, in order for a truce to be made between New Genesis and Apokolips, Highfather and Darkseid traded that which was most precious to them, their sons. Orion, Darkseid's (second) son was raised by Highfather on New Genesis, while Darkseid was to have raised (in a manner of speaking) Highfather's son, Scott Free (the would be Mr Miracle).
However Darkseid had a plan, and did not raise Scott Free as his son in the way that Highfather did with Orion, and instead he sent Scott Free to Granny Goodness' military academy, ostensibly to be trained as one of Darkseid's elite troops, but in reality to torture the boy into one day escaping, thus breaking the treaty, but not before Darkseid had had the time to rebuild his war diminished forces. It was Granny Goodness who named him Scott Free as a cruel joke, and steadfastly refusing to become one with the evil of Apokolips it became Scott's mission in life to break free and escape, honing his skills over the years during his many, many escape attempts, until finally he escaped Apokolips and eventually ended up on Earth. And his escape, as Darkseid had planned, broke the treaty between New Genesis and Apokolips.
Kalibak has a deep seeded hatred of his brother Orion due to the fact that, despite him being first son, and despite the fact that Darkseid traded Orion away as part of the peace treaty, their father had always favoured his second son, Orion, over Kalibak, and to this day, despite Orion's hatred of his father, still does, as he sees far more potential in Orion than Kalibak has ever possessed. In fact Darkseid sees Kalibak as little more than a disappointment in his eyes, and as such he sees Orion, not Kalibak, as his natural successor - once Orion has been broken of his New Genesis instilled morality and has finally and wholly succumbed to his inbred Apokolips rage that is. As a result Kalibak has constantly tried to defeat his brother in order to earn his father's respect and what he deems his right of succession as ruler of Apokolips upon his father's death.
Of course the biggest problem with the New Gods is that the continuity has been made an absolute shambles over the years as subsequent writers have come in and taken threads of what Kirby had done, and then gone their own way, some with better results than others. But all seem to eventually trip and stumble or even outright fail, and after the series gets cancelled flash forward a couple more years and in comes another writer to do yet another total reboot/re-imagining, pretty much ignoring all of what the last writer(s) had done, while going off on their own strands of what Kirby had left when the titles were originally axed back in the day. And because of all that kind of confusion, I guess certain aspects of what is considered true continuity are pretty much readers choice until DC does it's next "this is officially how it is now" New Gods reboot.
