Artist Chris Jones can be seen lurking around here on the LOG forum, conversing with his many fans regarding his work. We did this Q&A with Chris a few years ago..so check it out and get to know him a bit better!
About Chris Jones
work history
I've been drawing comics all my life, and professionally since 1989. My first work for DC Comics was in 1998 as a fill-in artist on - of all things - Young Heroes in Love. After that I did a few assorted Justice
League 5 and 10-page stories, and a number of issues of Justice League Adventures. I started drawing The Batman Strikes on a monthly basis last year, and I also draw Dr. Blink, Superhero Shrink, which I
co-created with writer John Kovalic. That book is colored and lettered by my girlfriend Melissa, so it's a very comics-friendly household.
You can find a complete listing of my work on my web site
a bit about Chris from the man himself:
I love comics and feel like I have my dream job. I might wish for a little more clout in the industry or better pay, but I get to draw Batman every month and that's a real thrill. I live in the Twin Cities
area of Minnesota with my girlfriend Melissa Kaercher, and help run a science fiction convention called CONvergence (www.convergence-con.org). I get to get on stage and do comedy and
theater two or three times a year and wish I had time to do more. I love monster movies and food that's bad for me.
Do you collect Batman merchandise?
I've got a fair number of action figures and Batmobiles. I don't tend to collect the "hot" stuff or complete lines or anything like that. I just tend to get the stuff I like. And can afford. The most I've ever spent on a "collectible" is I just HAD to have one of those Shakespeare busts with the flip up head and the hidden switch. I'm still trying to think of something good to wire it up to as a control. Sadly, my house has no hidden passageways.... that I've found yet.
'The Batman' Toon & Comic Q & A
favorite episode(s) so far?
I haven't had a chance to see every episode so far, but I'd have to say the Clayface two-parter is the best I've seen to date.
favorite character design?
When I first saw Jeff Matsuda's Batman design it seemed really odd, but I quickly warmed to that domed-helmet version of the mask and after drawing it for almost two years I really like it. As far as the villains go, I'd have to say my favorites are Bane and Mr. Freeze.
what characters do you hope to work with on Strikes in the future?
I've only gotten to draw one issue of Batgirl so far and enjoyed that a lot, so I'm looking forward to more of her. I'm also looking forward to getting to draw Robin sometime next year. I'd love to have Ra's al Ghul, Scarecrow or Two-Face show up, but they'll have to be used on the show before we'll get to have them in the comic. I'd love to have some other heroes show up, but we'll just have to see what the future holds...
General Batman Q & A
been a Batman fan long?
Pretty much all my life. I've got drawings I did at age five of Batman and other superheroes. But Batman has always been a favorite. I loved the Adam West series as a kid. Actually I went through a phase when I'd gotten old enough to realize they were playing it for laughs and I briefly HATED the show. Then I got a little older still and realized that the show was pretty funny. Especially that first season.
favorite bat-film?
Live Action: Batman Begins.
Overall, I might have to say Mask of the Phantasm or Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker. I think the animation is better in Return of the Joker, but "classic" Batman pushes my buttons more, so it's a tough
call.
do you read other comics?
Most of the comics I read are in graphic novel or trade paperback form. Other than my love for Batman, I tend to follow writers and artists more than characters. I really like Hellboy, Astro City, Alan Moore's
ABC stuff. I've been looking a lot at Paul Grist lately, and have recently gotten onto a big Jim Aparo kick. It started a few months before he died. I picked up the trade paperback of his run on The Spectre and it blew me away. I've been picking up individual issues of
his Phantom Stranger run, and hope they collect that as well.
favorite bat-villain?
When he's written well, probably Two-Face. I'd really love to draw a great Scarecrow story. In Batman Strikes, I've probably had the most fun drawing Bane, Joker, and Mr. Freeze.
