I just wondered what you all thought of the portrayal of Gotham in TDK? I understand Nolan wants to keep these films grounded in reality, but for me Gotham itself was too generic. We all know Gotham itself is a character in the Batman world. In BB, Gotham had that dark feel to it, just the right side of Gothic. I know a lot of BB was set in the narrows, so it made it easier to bring that dingy, dark edge. Gotham in TDK, felt as if it could be at the end of my road, which is wrong. I loved the film, but for me this was the only downer.

I completely agree with you. The Gotham of BB was much better than in TDK. I think they should have tried to have more continuity between the two films. For instance, I would have liked to have seen a construction crew working on repairing the train. It would have been a nice wink to the first one. Even B&R's Gotham had more character than TDK, especially if you like neon .

[shadow=red,left,300]I agree. Gotham City in TDK was very bland. It looked like a combination between Chicago and New York. And I really missed that Gothic feel. But on the other hand it felt like a real city! No neon and large ugly statues. So as you can tell I am undecided. [/shadow]

It did feel like a differant city,i think that was important as the Batman had changed the city so much since Begins,it was probably on purpose.

It was filmed in Chicago, and the skyline scenes are in Hong Kong.

Only for the parts of the film that were set in Hong Kong, the rest is Chicago.

I also found the representation of Gotham City in TDK to be one of its few flaws. Gotham in TDK was bland with almost no personality at all. Unlike in Begins, where even though some elements were over done (like the Narrows IMO), it was as least dynamic and unique.

You know I didn't particularly notice the city, I was so engrossed in the characters, but havin read these comments and lookin back, I'd have to say, much as I love the reality thing, it could have used something to make it more than any other city, like Wayne Tower in the first one, we never really got a shot of that in TDK, also because of the wayne manor being fixed storyline, we got no batcave, which is reason enough itself to make a third I reckon.

Hm, I didn't really notice a difference in Gotham City between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. I think the next time I see it I'll try to look for differences! I want a BatCave too! I thought we were going to have one in TDK, but no, it's a BatBunker!
