If I'm just starting to get into the comics should I be reading these? I've heard there are different Earths? Can anyone explain?

there's nothing wrong with reading those collections, but they take place during the Golden Age so nothing that happens in those collections will be referenced in later issues. they do take place on another Earth. Earth-Two. just know that none of what you read in those books actually occured to the regular Batman that everyone knows. like you'll early Detective Comics issues in those collections and see Batman carrying a gun. that isnt something the New Earth Batman has ever done and ever will do. if you want early issues of Batman start with the Showcase Presents... series. there are 3 volumes of Batman, plus one volume of Batman & the Outsiders, 2 for Robin, & 1 for Batgirl. some of the stuff in those is no longer in continuity, but alot of it still is and those are great, classic Silver Age stories.

If you want early stories of the post-crisis Batman, I would start with Year One.

I think Batman in the Forties is probably a better value than The Batman Chronicles because you get all of Batman's earliest adventures not just a few and you get it all in one book.
