Hey all, with my current streak of graphic novel/tpb reading, I realized that I might be interested in investing in Batman: The Long Halloween. I haven't heard much about this title, nor do I know much about it, other than it takes place sometime around the events of Year One. My point: could any one who's read this comic tell me how it is? Nothing about the story is needed, just how good you thought it was. It would be much appreciated!

ABSOLUTELY ONE OF THE BEST BATMAN STORIES EVER! THIS IS ACTUALLY THE STORY THAT MADE JEPH LOEB AND TIM SALE COMIC SUPERSTARS, AND THERE IS NO QUESTION "WHY?". IT CHRONICLES GOTHAM'S TRANSITION FROM "REGULAR MOBSTERS" TO "INSANE CRIMINAL FREAKS", AS WELL AS DEVELOP THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN BATMAN, GORDON AND DENT, AS THEY FORM A PARTNERSHIP TO FACE THIS EVIL FORCES AND SOLVE THE MURDER MISTERY THAT FUELS THE STORY. PICK IT UP, AND I HOPE TO HEAR YOUR THOUGHTS ON "WHO'S HOLIDAY?" SOON.

I'd agree with the story is one of the all time greats - but I hate the artwork. Again Dark Victory "A Halloween Special" is also a worthwhile read but I really don't like the Sale artwork.
Still I used to think that about Kelley Jones' work but I really like it now.

I notice you are doing a little Jeph Loeb reading...Hush and now maybe LH & DV!
Great choices. Me, my wife, and 4 of my friends adore Jeph's writing....he is my wife and I's favorite writer. Why? Hush, Long Halloween, and Dark Victory are AMAZING!!! They are must reads if you claim to be a Batfan. You may want to pick up Batman: Haunted Knight for fun. I am getting Superman: Man for all Seasons (or whatever it is) this week.

Cool. I think I will read it. I didn't realize it was a sequel to Dark Victory, so I'll have to get that, too. And I love Hush!

Loeb & Sale are a phenomenal pair when it comes to Batman, and I liked the Superman For All Seasons a lot too. Long Halloween is excellent. If you can track down their three Halloween one-shots (which have been collected in a softcover collection), that's definitely worth getting too.

I have to agree with Warlord, I wasn't a fan of Sale's artwork at all in Long Halloween and Dark Bictory, and I outright hated his artwork in Superman For All Seasons (so much so it actually detracted from the story for me, something art good or bad almost never does for me), but the books are well worth reading for any self respecting Bat-fan, definitely.
I must say though, and I know that I'm in the extreme minority on this, that I did find The Long Halloween to be slightly over rated, it was good, very good even, but I never found it quite great, despite some fantastic character moments. The story and mystery just wasn't quite up to the characterizations at times for me. Still a damn good book all the same.
Dark Victory though, and again I'm in the minority here, I thought was even better than TLH, although the ending felt like a bit of a cheap (and predictable) cop out for my tastes. Still despite any minor quibbles I might personally have both are still very good books at the very least, and definitely must reads for Batfans.
Severen.

What else can I say that hasn't been said. LH & DV (along with Haunted Knight) are some of my fav. bat stories. They're a definite read.

His Batman looked great. I'd like to see Dwayne Turner do a stint at Batman. Currently doing some Superman stuff, but comes from Curse of the Spawn & Witchblade to name a few.

I thought that Tim Sale's art was not bad and a nice change from the hyper-realistic art form that a lot of books aim for. I really enjoy Loeb and Sale's Bat-stories and I am looking forward to each issue of When in Rome.

as its been mentioned, if you havent already done so, be sure to go get the sequel, dark victory. also another book by the loeb/sale team thats is very much worth checking out is haunted knight.

Will do! And is Haunted Knight a sequel to TLH, as well? Or a prequel? its actually neither. its the first works of the loeb/sale team. they did 3 halloween specials, and i guess the 4th year or so, DC decided to put them all in one book. from there they went and did the long halloween. after so many great reviews fo it, they decided to work on a sequel to LH with dark victory. i think it'd be kool if they now came up with something to follow up Dv with hehe.

Haunted Knight is great! And mark me as another who truly enjoyed The Long Halloween, save for its artwork. Dark Victory is good, but my least favorite of these three titles. I'm hoping it grows on me, but... either way, satisfying reading however you look at it.

I remember collecting each issue, one month at a time, when it started, and not being able to wait for the next one to come out - which has been pretty much the case with every Bat-story done by Mr. Loeb.

TLH's art is meh at best, but the story is one of the best I've ever read. Which definitely makes up for the artistic flaws, in my mind at least.

I really liked the art in TLH. It fits the story and has a very unique style. Maybe it is an acquired taste. But it gives a very noirish feel and I think it suits Batman's universe the best.

That could be true...Sale could be looked at as an "abstract" Batman artist...Though I do think Lee did some very Noirish art in the flashback scenes in Hush...
