I think free comicbook day is a great idea however I wish they would send retailers comics that didnt have that strange UPC on them. I guess that is so they can protect themselves from the lovely speculators that would simply turn around and sell them rather than use them as they were intended which is to pomote the hobby. Gosh, you just gotta love speculators dont cha? ;D

[shadow=green,left,300]You know what Robert...I actually have to disagree with you on this one...I love it just from a collector standpoint. If I like the comic..I either already have the issue or will buy it anyway, so the additional promo collectible is fun for me![/shadow]

Here's a little info on FCBD '05.
the date for 2005’s Free Comic Book Day was announced: May 7th, moving it back to the first weekend of May.
The other proposed date, June 18th, the day after the opening of Batman Begins had support from a minority of retailers, as 73.5% voted for May, with 26.5% voting for June. The first weekend of May was proposed and supported by many retailers who sought to have FCBD be an annual event at the same time every year, so their customers and communities could grow to look forward to it, year in, year out.
While tying the event to a major comic book movie release did have its proponents who pointed to cross-promotion at a time of heightened comic-book awareness, as well as easy tie-ins with theaters near comic book shops, those opposed pointed to 2004, when originally, FCBD was to be the day after Spider-Man 2 opened, but was, in reality, three days after the opening, as Sony changed the opening date long after the date for FCBD was set. It was also argued that tying the event to a movie only works when a movie is being released that year, as well as the opinion that if the movie is a bomb, FCBD as an event may be harmed.

Since I'm kind of a 'numbers junkie' at work, I thought this was an interesting article about FCBD and the impact that cross promotion with a movie tie in can have.
Free Comic Book Day Retailer Survey Diamond Releases the Data September 22, 2004 Diamond Comic Distributors has released data from the retailer survey taken in the wake of Free Comic Book Day 2004. More than half the respondents rated FCBD 2004 as better than or as good as FCBD 2003.
54.8% of the storeowners promoted FCBD more aggressively than in 2003, with almost 90% of the respondents using signage to promote the event, while 72% used bag stuffers, 54% emails, and nearly 50% managed to get newspaper coverage. Actual purchased promotion in the form of newspaper ads (28%), radio spots (14.2%) and TV commercials (7.4%) were utilized at lower rates. At least one third of the respondents highlighted the event in store newsletters.
A large percentage of retailers (37.7%) cross-promoted FCBD with other retailers in their vicinity, while an equal number cross-promoted the event with movie theaters showing Spider-Man 2. The theatrical cross-promotions appeared to have been more effective, with 47% of respondents singling it out as the most effective promotional tool they used, while 40% of those who cross-promoted with other local businesses cited it as their most effective or second most effective tool. If the survey results had been available before retailers voted on the date for FCBD, would the effectiveness of the theatrical cross-promotions swayed more voters toward linking FCBD 2005 to the release of Batman Begins?
Almost 90% of the retailers participating in this year's FCBD had also participated in 2003, and 52.2% ordered more FCBD books than they had in 2003.
In general, retailers reported more gains in traffic than in sales on FCBD 2004. More than half of that traffic (53%) was made up of new customers (38%) and returning customers who hadn't shopped in the store in quite some time (15%). One of the most encouraging aspects of the survey was the fact that 70% of the respondents gained customers thanks to the FCBD efforts and 35.8% of the storeowners reported that sales increased significantly in the month following FCBD, with most of the gains reported in the 10-20% growth range.
Here are the results for store traffic:
Better than usual for a Saturday 65.00% Worse than usual for a Saturday 8.60% About the same for a Saturday 12.90% Better than a Wednesday 13.60% Better than FCBD 2003 40.00% Worse than FCBD 2003 30.70% About the same as FCBD 2003 15.70% I did not participate in FCBD 2003 13.60%
And here are the survey results for sales:
Better than usual for a Saturday 57.10% Worse than usual for a Saturday 6.40% About the same for a Saturday 25.00% Better than a Wednesday 11.40% Better than FCBD 2003 43.90% Worse than FCBD 2003 27.30% About the same as FCBD 2003 15.10% I did not participate in FCBD 2003 13.70%

Oddly, one of my local comic shop owners is thinking about moving the date to coincide with Begins anyway - he thinks that will be a better tie in and bring more people into the store. www.icv2.com/articles/indepth/5720.html

Just a little self-promotion here: If you're in the Dallas area on May 7th, I'll be at Zeus Comics and Toys. We're turning Free Comic Book day into a big shin-dig... Big tent outside, lots of guests, including little ol' me, showing off the customs. (Sadly, I have no customs to give away. You'll have to be satisfied with a little white mini-mate!)
Guess I better start packing.

I wish I could see any of those three guys in person. It's ok though, we're getting Phil Hester here, so I'm happy, since he's one of the nicest 'industry' guys I've ever met. Maybe I'll have him sign my Bloodlines annual again.... ;D

Got a Star Wars comic for my son (best they had available) and bought Superman/Batman while I was there. Went to Comix Plus in Mount Kisco, NY, though my usual haunt is Comic Book Heaven in White Plains, NY. Both are good stores.

last I heard from reideen's wife he was still standing in line to meet Phil Hester! I wanted too...but that line was just too damn long! I was in line for about 45 minutes, but it was TOTALLY worth the wait!! I ended up with 4 signed comics (Nightwing #107, Green Arrow #'s 43, 44 and 45 - the HIV and 1st App of the new Speedy), a beautiful Batman pic from Mr Hester and a guarantee of an interview.... I'll be posting a thread to get your questions soon! (Post your questions here.) I also got my bag 'o minimates - I've got....like 30 of the things sitting here on my table and that's not counting all the singles that me and the kids picked up! ;D 7 or 8 Heroclix, piles of comics.... I guess it pays to have a family with lots of kids!

I did get some comics, but the whole reason I wanted to go was the heroclix and minimate!!!!! GOSH DARN!!!! Yeah, the first store I went to was out of 'mates. They opened at 10am and I was there at 1pm, so it took 3 hours for them to be gone. They were on their third package/box of heroclix too and had started limiting how many people could take. I just grabbed a handful and put them in my bag. Good thing I ordered a bag of 'mates for customs or I'd have missed out on them entirely. My wife and I split up since I was waiting for a few signatures and a sketch. She took the kids to another store and they had some 'mates there, so everybody got a couple, plus I got my bag.
