Wow. So many metaphors. So many adjectives. So little time.
X3 is what happens when you compose a script by committee. Everyone comes to the table with their own ideas, and everyone's too polite to veto anyone else. The result is a mess of unresolved, under-developed plot threads leaving no one satisfied.
Anyone who has followed the creative drama of this film knows it's been in turmoil since day one. And boy howdy, does it show. It's clear to me know that the suits in charge knew they had a stinker of script, and that's why they pushed it through the pipeline so fast.
For those who enjoyed the first two X-films (like me), don't expect the same kind of care and respect for the material. What you can expect is zero character development. Zero follow through of plot threads. Zero heart and soul. And zero respect for the film franchise.
Okay, it's a rotten film. Many of us expected that. But is it fun? The last act is. Sort of. Even it falls apart at the end. But the first two acts… Snore. Major events happen in those acts, and yet the lack of character development and access prevented me from caring.
A lot of people have blamed Ratner (the director) for this. But really, the ship was sunk before he got on.
Do I recommend seeing it? Not really. I consider myself an armchair X-fan, and I love super hero stories, but I like good scripts best. This does not qualify.
The one thing worth praise? Kelsey Grammer. I expected to see Kelsey every time I looked at Beast. But that didn't happen. He was totally convincing. Well, maybe not the growls...
P.S. For those who go, make sure to stay past the credits.
C.

Thanks for the review Cas. I tend to get my hopes up too far for such things, so this will go well for me that I won't expect much from the film. I'm still going to see it, moreso to see the characters on-screen than anything else. And now I know to stay past the credits, which I would not have done otherwise.

Thanks for the non-spoilerific review. Unfortunately, X3 like Da Vinci Code is probably bomb-proof and so audiences will flock because of the care that Singer took with these characters over the first two films. I am going to watch it next weekend with 0 expectations.

Thanks for the heads up C. I was afraid of this. I still plan on watching it just to complete the series but I'm already convinced X2 is my favorite of the bunch. It just makes me anticipate Superman even more.

Any worries I had for this film were confirmed by your review Cas. Like some others have stated, I will go see this this weekend as well just to complete the series.

to be honest, i can't even remember what happened in X2. i've seen the first one a few times on tv, but only saw X2 once on rented dvd.
i will see this anyway, just to complete the series, as Bullock said.
Superman is the still my most anticipated movie of the year, followed by Casino Royale, just wish they had put that off till next year (2007). just think of the marketing opportunities. they could have made 2007 the "Year of Bond".

Thanks Casimir. I was hoping Dark Phoenix would bring out a great sequel. Im still going to watch it, however its good for insight. Actually, one of the AICN reviews said it best. To paraphase: The movie doesn't use the Dark Phoenix story. At all. It's really just SUPERJEAN acting angry and cranky. And the explanation for her "development" is beyond lame. Completely ignoring what was previously set up in the first two films. The last shot in X2 with a visual hint of the fiery phoenix? Yeah, that's as close as you'll get to seeing that. And yes, this film really is that bad. If all that matters to you is seeing mutants on screen, you'll love it. If killing off characters without any emotional connection is your thing, you're in luck. But if you like even a shade of character development, just a hint, or respect for the source material, go see "Over the Hedge." Comparatively speaking, from what I've seen on the net today, my review was kind. C.

Damn! This is one of those films that people are either going to love or hate-there seems to be no middle ground on the reviews.I'm eager to see it just to see what side of the fence my opinion falls on.I loved the first two X-films but I also loved Daredevil and hated the first Spiderman...so my likes dont always line up with the rest of the fanboy world.I think as long as Magneto is on-screen acting like a badass,I'll be satisfied!

Well! It seems the critics seem to differ on the movie website. It says here that the critics gave it an A- and the critics that own the movie.go.com website gave it a B. Everyone's got an opinion but I just wanted to let you know

Just got back from seeing it-here's my thoughts. I Liked it quite a bit but I can see why Cas. and others probably didnt. This is really going to come down to personal opinion-I dont think anybodys review is gonna prepare you for this film. And just like I thought, you'll either love it or hate it.It did seem VERY rushed and had way less plot and character development. In a lot of ways it reminded me of the 90's X-men cartoon.I think I liked it a little more just because of the actors involved and all the plot points set up in the first 2 films. As a stand alone film, its just OK but I feel that if you watched it back to back with X2 it would flow pretty well. And I had my doubts, but Beast turned out AWESOME!

Kelsey Grammar was the ONLY choice for Beast. I have ben wanting him to be Beast since the first X-Men and if they didnt choose him, I wouldnt watch this movie. He has everything, the manly shape, the intellectual voice, and by goodness he even looks like Beast! He looks flawless and I think I'll enjoy him most in this movie.

[shadow=purple,left,300]I'm going to see this on Sunday. I just hope its not as bad as what I've read from the critics today.[/shadow] I just came back from watching this. If you love comic book movies then you will love this one. Plenty of characters and fight scenes, loads of action and plenty to see. Ignore the critics and enjoy it for what it is.

well I have just gopt back from seeing It and man I thought it ruled so did everyone in the cinema-sure it has a dumb moment or two but 99% of Comic book movies do.but the final fight is a joy as is Shadowcat throughout. I highly enjoyed this and as usual the anti marvel bias of Harry and the clowndersons over at AICN is totally unwarranted. go and see it before Judgement is passed-its dark in places too-watched back to back with X2 this will totally rule. sure 1 or two things dissapointed me-but man the good FAR outweighs the very little bad in there A from me anyway

I saw it today with Holly and the kids.
Holly gave it a B-...I gave it a B
I enjoyed some of the humorous moments and seeing the mutants in action is always fun...but we both disliked how things weren't at ALL settled. If you're wrapping up a film franchise, give fans some closure....oh, and NOT half-a s s e d closure that goes completely against comic continuity.
It bothers me...in the end scene
SPOILERS AHEAD
how when all of Magneto's mutants are attacking the five X-men(couldn't they put in some more good muties?!) how NONE of them used their mutant powers! They'd just jump and punch while Wolvie cut 'em to pieces. I don't get it....

There are extra scenes at the end of the movie is what I've heard from interviews. This is true, and believe me it is worth aiting through the credits. I saw it this afternoon and was impressed overall. I understand some comic continuity issues are rewritten for movies. Lots of surprises. Nice action movie, but I felt it was rushed and not enough time developing new characters. BTW, there was an awesome Ghost Rider trailer as well as the best Superman preview yet. Closeup slow motion shot of bullet bouncing off Supes eye. This will be great.

gald to see folks arent feeling the hate for this.yeah it felt rushed but this will be great watched back to back with the others.I need to see Kitty again(she really impressed me)especially her chats with Juggernaut so i hope there is another. I always said using Jugs in the movie was a bad Idea and I think I was right for the most part. Beast Ruled-especially the "oh my stars and Garters part" and his fight scenes. overall Singer is a tough act to follow folks and I think Ratner done his best here and coped admirably

Took my son today, it was good. I don't think this is a good way to end the franchise, unless they plan to take it into a diff.direction. As with any comic series, diff. writers bring a new approach, Ratner took a new approach, more action less developement of characters. Based on the $ this franchise makes and the way the dead always find a way of coming back, I don't think this will be the last of the X films.
