[shadow=purple,left,300]THE DARK KNIGHT is coming in 2008, so post various updates in this thread! This is for minor news which probably won't get debated or discussed much on the main forum (we want to keep space free, to a point at least!). Also, this first post will serve as a reference to those seeking some basic info, and it will be updated as updates become available.
Here's what we know:
-The official title is THE DARK KNIGHT -To be released during summer 2008 -Filming is expected to begin in early 2007
Cast (as of 8/8/06):
Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/ Batman Heath Ledger as the Joker Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth Gary Oldman as James Gordon Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox Katie Holmes as Rachael Dawes
-Christopher Nolan will direct and co-write the film's screenplay -Jonathan Nolan, Chris's brother, is working on the film's screenplay
**I won't expect this to be updated a lot until early 2007 when production begins, but feel free to post updates as you see fit. These updates are suppose to be news, NOT rumors. Also, please attempt to keep out any extra conversations, especially if it discusses/ debates topics we already have threads on!**
Thanks! [/shadow]

[shadow=purple,left,300]Katie Holmes will most likely be returning. It's a top story at Comics2Film.
Whether or not her role will be huge is another thing, since she is apparently 'limiting' her acting.[/shadow]

Film Focus talked to Bale about Dark Knight:
OKay, so The Dark Knight is the title, he's happy about Ledger, now this is stupid but when he joked about going back to Arkham, is that a plot point?
See? That was a dumb question.

i thought it was confirmed that lucious (morgan freeman) is returning? [shadow=purple,left,300]I'll look into it, but I don't think anything's official as of yet (despite the high likelihood of his return).
*Update: IMDB has him listed as a returning player, so I'll add him.[/shadow]

This just came in from BOF.
Nolan Talks TDK! Author: Jett Wednesday, August 23, 2006 - 9:54 AM CENTRAL TIME: Nolan has finally spoken publicly about the upcoming film, THE DARK KNIGHT. Via BETTERTHANFUDGE.COM, here’s a bit of what the director had to say:
Regarding the theme of the film: “I suppose in loose terms I can say it’s about things having to get worse before they get better.”
Can anything be inferred from the title of the film? “Ultimately yes. But I’ll leave that for people to infer The title has been chose very specifically. It’s quite important to the film.”
Will The Joker be different that past live-action interpretations? “Yes. I would certainly point to The Killing Joke but I also would point very much to the first two appearances of The Joker in the comic. If you look at where The Joker comes from there’s a very clear direction that fits what we’re doing very well.”
Thanks to all the BOF'ers who sent in the info...
The word going around is that there may be some new THE DARK KNIGHT news coming in September. The last time I heard such rumblings was just prior to the Ledger/TDK announcements...

sounds like this is confirming most everything i had hoped he said killing joke which we've all being praying for i will have to check into the first 2 joker appearences (i think its Batman #1 & 2)
one thing i'd like to add is that the Scarecrow pretty much HAS to be in the film i know, i know the penguin, joker, and the scarecrow?!?! as well as dent, possibl zsaz and god knows who else! but at the end of batman begins, when they speak of escalation and stuff in the closing statements of the film, they specifically point of that Crane is still loose, i can accept zsaz not being in the next movie (although i really liked seeing him, and wouldnt mind seeing him again), but i dont think they can comfortably just leave crane out of the film, they sealed him coming back (even if it is just the 3rd one i suppose) by mentioning him at the end
also this news says that it will get worse before it gets better i hope the next 2 movies arent totally connected like matrix 2 and 3 were they had a totally different feel from the 1st one, the 1st one is a great, dark movie (in a way like begins) and the other 2 strayed off and ruined it i doubt this will happen to batman, but i am not hoping for a cliffhanger ending (things have to get worse) making way for the 3rd one (before things get better)

more news at bof says they will take a lot of story from batman #1 and batman #251 (i have a reprint of 1 and i have 251, so i will read them both now) it also said sean penn was offered the joker and turned it down (idiot, not that i was exactly pulling for him or anything, just that anyone who doesn't want to be in batman, and portray this villian is a newb) they mentioned something about the joker killing his henchmen at will to tell you the truth i don't especially want to see him killing his own men, i guess that they can do it right.... we shall see (2 years is s*so* far away) i can only pray harder and harder that they start filming 3 quickly and plan to release it about 6 months later like matrix that'd be...wonderful

Excellent. & yes there is rumor that 2 & 3 will shoot back to back IE: Pirates of the Caribean 2 & 3 style. Crane will probably make an appearance, Penguin is not specifid however, for the Nolans' script. I hope Black Mask is still in the mix. & 2 & 3 are tied together, because Harvey Dent becomes Two-Face either in the end of 2 or begining of 3. In the Uslan treatment, the Joker caused the transformation in court. There is no word whether or not, that will still happen.

[glow=red,2,300] I dont know If Im crazy about the idea of the Joker making Harvey two-face 1)It would show how bad the Joker could be I suppose 2)It would link the character's wwhich I dont think I like, such as in Ultimate spiderman Doc ock and the green goblin are linked,Im just not crazy about the idea. I'm not sure if I'd like to see TDK and the third one back-to-back. Don't get me wrong, but I'd like to see some build up to the third one, having a long waiting period like the Spider-Man movies, not like the Matrix. That's just me.

i would like to see the movies to be filmed back to back because one thing about having them be spread out is that actors returning are less likely because of deaths (ie. dumbledor), deciding not to return to do other projects, ext. Also if they are going to connect the movies really close like the joker going on trial and scaring dent in the third then it should be shot close togeather so audiences dont have to wait and for the reason above.

I agree Blackgate, because I was madly concerned about Caine and Freeman's health, both passed 70 already. I'm sure they'll live through but I wouldnt like a back to back script. It would work, IMO however if they wrote both scripts but spanded the time.

Yah, pre prod. is starting. The designs, costumes, vehicles, the rest of the casting etc. 'll be done sometime in spring when production starts. Since it's coming in '08. It would make more sense to shoot back to back, 'cause there's a huge gap between post prod & release otherwise

But besides his age i think he could pull of the role rather well.

I can't believe Hoffman turned down the role. It's seems as if both of Nolan's first choices have denied the role. Shaun Penn was origionally offered The Joker & denied it. I think he would've been great, but Ledger seems to be even better

BOF recently had an interview with Lachy Hulme. This is all bat-related discussion from the interview:"Jett:Alright dude, you know I’ve got to ask you about this -- What’s the deal with The Joker and how in the hell did you get in the mix for the part? LH: You guys, that’s how. Your website, man. The first I heard of it, someone rang me to say that they’d heard on the radio that I actually had the part, and this was before BATMAN BEGINS had even come out, so this was early 2005. And on the radio, they were apparently quoting from your site, so there you have it. Of course, I had to explain to my family that I wasn’t playing the part, but from that moment on, the media have been chasing me around asking for a quote, which I couldn’t give. But every other weekend down here, there would be some blurb or column in the papers talking about how I was the “front-runner” or some Poop. Thank God Heath got the gig, ‘cause now the press can all Darn off. But the Internet speculation has been extraordinary. Unbelievable! Jett:Now I never reported it, but there was talk that you met with Chris Nolan. True? LH Never. Although, according to the Internet, not only have I met him, we’re now part owners in a racehorse together. Jett:(laughs) What about Charles Roven? LH: I’ve met Chuck, but not about Batman. I mean, we did talk about Batman, and certainly talked about all of the rumors about me playing The Joker, but nothing more than that. We talked more about some other projects he’s doing. But interestingly, about 10 minutes after I walked out of my meeting with Chuck, it was all over the Internet that I’d been there. News travels fast in Hollywood, mate. And funnily enough, news travels fast everywhere, because the only time I’ve ever talked about Batman was on radio in Melbourne, on Tony Martin’s show, and I made a few wisecracks about the Batman gig, and suddenly it’s all over the world that I’m in these so-called “secret talks” about playing The Joker. If memory serves, that was your site that picked all of that up. You guys are faster than CNN. Jett:Did you screentest? LH: No. As far as I know, no one did. No one was asked. Christopher Nolan strikes me as the kind of guy that doesn’t have to test actors anymore, certainly not for roles like The Joker. He knows who he wants, and he gets them. Jett:We know that Heath Ledger is The Joker, but how would you have played him? LH: However the director wants me to play it, simple as that. (laughs) Thats my job. Obviously you come to work with your own ideas, with your own prep and your research done, and you try to impose some sort of personal vision onto the role youre playing, whether that be through the costume or the accent or the ticking clock inside whomever youre playing, or whatever. But even with a role like The Joker, which is open to so much interpretation, you ultimately have to acquiesce to the director, otherwise get out of the way. Acting is not like painting. You dont get to sit in a corner and create your own special thing. Youre part of a team. Youre servicing a vision, particularly in feature films. Thats what you get paid for. Jett:Is it true that you are a big Batman fan -- like me for instance? LH: Not as such. And I dont mean any disrespect to you guys, who all supported me, but Im not a huge comic book fan, by any stretch. By the way, Im reliably informed that you guys are nicknamed by the powers that be at Warner Bros. as the Batman Fundamentalists, or the DC Fundamentalists. (laughs) You guys wield an extraordinary amount of power, believe me. I think Im living proof of that. We wouldnt be chatting unless you guys had flexed your muscles. Jett: gotcha. But it was rumored that you were a huge Bat-fan. I think that the BOF readers loved that about you by the way. LH: Yeah, that started because of the mucking around on Tony Martins show. I think I said I would be claiming Batman comics on my tax return if I got the role, but that was just a stupid attempt at witty repartee on my part. I do like the character. I think hes the best of all the comic book heroes, and I certainly read some of the comics when I was a kid, so being thought of as a Batman fan is nice company to be in. Jett:OK, with that said, what did you think about BATMAN BEGINS? LH: Loved it. Brilliant. Different from Richard Donner’s SUPERMAN, but on par with it in terms of an origin story. Great cast, great script, just a great movie. A really well crafted movie. Obviously, with all the Internet speculation about me playing The Joker, I certainly delved very heavily into the Batman world, as my interest was piqued, and so I watched that movie many, many times, on DVD. I also bought a lot of comics, the anthology ones, like The Greatest Batman Stories Ever Told and so on. And I’d read Dark Knight Returns years ago, so I went back to that, and Year One. I’m starting to sound like a fan-boy now, aren’t I? Jett:Dude, come on! You‘re NOT a Batman fan -- riiiiiight. LH: (laughs) But it was more just out of interest as an actor. Actually, going back to what you asked before, about how I might have approached the role of The Joker, I suppose the obvious thing would be to just go back to the original version of the character. That interests me. Everyone raves about what Alan Moore did with The Killing Joke, but ultimately, that version of the character demands you to feel sympathy for the guy, and I don’t believe we should feel anything but fear and disgust for him. For me, the most interesting version is what Bob Kane and Bill Finger did with the first incarnation of the character, which was basically a prototype for the modern-day serial killer, something like what The Zodiac Killer in San Francisco in the 60s and 70s was, a killer who announces his crimes and then commits them in a way that makes no sense, and then just disappears back into the shadows. An unstoppable force, a very dark, scary force. I found that very compelling, that first ever Joker story. At the end of the day, there should be nothing sympathetic about a character like The Joker, and certainly nothing funny about him. I know everybody hearing this or, sorry, reading this will hate me for saying that, but that would be my jumping-off point as an actor. Until the director told me to shut up and do it his way. (laughs) And by the way, I’m not trying to insult The Killing Joke or Alan Moore or anything like that. In fact, I can see why his take on The Joker has inspired such a passionate following, because it’s, y’know, such an intelligent and literate take on the character for the modern reader. But you can’t go past the Bob Kane/Bill Finger version, in my opinion. They nailed him right from the start. And Jerry Robinson, too. Did I mention him? Jett:On my site, the fans have debated the good and bad of the “Burton/Schumacher” Bat-films for years. What did you think of them? LH: Not much. I mean, there are some cool moments in all of them, with the exception, of course, of Batman & Robin. Good God, what a piece of Poop film. You need subtitles to understand what the hell Schwarzenegger is saying! Terrible. Just freaking terrible. And a pity, too. They never made a truly satisfying Batman movie until Nolan came along. I mean, the casting of Christian Bale was just perfect. He also would have made a great James Bond, but carrying the world’s two biggest movie franchises might be too big a task, even for him! (laughs) " & BOF has reported that Liev Shrieber is no longer in the mix for Harvey Dent. Guy Pierce is now rumored.

To tell you the truth, im glad that hes not playing the joker. I hated the idea from start. He never gave me a good feel for the part of the joker. Ive come to like the casting of Ledger and can't wait to see his interperatation.
